On 17 September thirty of us, twenty as cohort and ten who call the ship home, sailed out of Port Townsend aboard the 1913 schooner Adventuress for four days on the Salish Sea, with our phones in a drawer and one task: to record the water, the weather and the ways of being on it as we found them in 2026. This is the log of those days, one day at a time, and the place where the whole of it will be written once the four days are down.
Off the dock. A rare sail straight off the berth at Port Townsend, the head-hand-heart rotation, and a minke at the mouth of the inlet.
Read. A full day under sail, the first sessions on what is in the water, and the first of the talks. To come.
Make. Back toward Port Townsend, the long afternoon of making, and the record brought together. To come.
Carry it home. The early watch, the last of the way in, and what we carried off the dock. To come.
Island Lab is a practice in coastal resilience: experiments in bringing people, places and ideas together, on ships we charter and on our members' own boats. The next gatherings, and how to come, are at islandlab.dev/gatherings.
