Gatherings · Small boat · Fall 2026

The Long Dark Sail.

From October to February few boats are out, the days are short and the water is the clearest of the year.

Between October and February the anchorages are close to empty. We anchor somewhere sheltered, walk a shoreline at low tide, and spend the long evenings below with the heater on.

Thursday to Sunday aboard Petrichor, our Catalina 36, out of Shilshole Bay Marina in Seattle: aboard from 5pm on the Thursday, back alongside by 3pm on the Sunday. Six aboard. The running costs are shared and the figure for this weekend is in the facts beside; a deposit holds your berth once the weekend is confirmed and comes off the total. The boat, what to expect and what to bring are on the quarterly weekends page.

The first weekend with six names goes. Nobody pays until a weekend fills. Weekends:

  • 5–8 NovThe clocks have gone back.
  • 12–15 NovMid November. The first real storms of the winter.
  • 3–6 DecThe darkest weekend of the set.

The question

What does a coast do when the people leave it alone?
